چکیده

Abstract Staff working with nocturnal mammals at Poznań Zoo, noticed erythematous bite marks on their hands and parts of necks. No perpetrators were immediately obvious, but the experienced mainly by persons caring for slow loris Nycticebus pygmaeus . The purpose this study was to collect ectoparasites from four N. , identify species involved ascertain whether they carry any pathogenic organisms that might pose a health risk people who have been bitten. A total 51 Ornithonyssus bacoti (Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae) mites collected coats loris, 37 which used molecular analysis determine if carrying disease-causing organisms. DNA extracted screened candidate pathogens including Babesia spp. Rickettsia spp., none identified. authors suspect because zoo differs in its sanitary veterinary conditions those found nature, results obtained here may differ markedly existing natural environment. Although we cannot be certain stage did not other addition detectable primers used, reaction likely reflects response secretions rather than transmitted pathogens.

Hibernation in the pygmy slow loris (Nycticebus pygmaeus): multiday torpor in primates is not restricted to Madagascar

Hibernation and short daily torpor are states of energy conservation with reduced metabolism and body temperature. Both hibernation, also called multiday torpor, and daily torpor are common among mammals and occur in at least 11 orders. Within the primates, there is a peculiar situation, because to date torpor has been almost exclusively reported for Malagasy lemurs. The single exception is the...

Does toxic defence in Nycticebus spp. relate to ectoparasites? The lethal effects of slow loris venom on arthropods.

The venom produced by slow lorises (Nycticebus spp.) is toxic both intra- and inter-specifically. In this study we assessed the ecoparasite repellent properties of their venom. We tested venom from two Indonesian slow loris species: Nycticebus javanicus and Nycticebus coucang. Arthropods directly exposed to brachial gland secretions mixed with saliva from both species were immediately impaired ...

Scanning Electron Microscopy Study of the Dorsal Surface of the Tongue in the Slow Loris (Nycticebus coucang) and Pygma Slow Loris (N. pygmaeus)

The dorsal surface of the tongues of the Slow Loris and the Pygma Slow Loris were examined by employing scanning electron microscopy techniques. Three types of the papillae are present on their dorsal surface of the tongue: filiform, fungiform and vallate. The filiform papillae are located the apex and the body of the tongue, and we observed that each of them has a gustatory pore. The fungiform...

Climate-mediated activity of the Javan Slow Loris, Nycticebus javanicus

Joint impacts of anthropogenic disturbance and climate change are of pressing concern for modern conservationists. Climate change patterns have various diminishing effects on the biodiversity of an ecosystem, requiring an understanding of a species‘ ability to adapt. Agricultural practices are expanding at an altitudinal gradient on the Indonesian island of Java, forcing endemic species to rang...
